Today, I’ve got a story for you…
It’s about the day my future became clear…
I was a junior in high school when an occupational therapist (OT) and a physical therapist (PT) both spoke at our high school career day.
I knew I was interested in allied health, but I was not sure what direction to go. I scheduled shadow days with both an OT and a PT.
I spent the morning with an OT in a Veteran’s Affairs (VA) hospital in Augusta, GA. I was puzzled when she began her session with the veteran by reading him the obituaries. This veteran was in a stage of his life when he was frequently losing family and friends to natural causes. Before he could start his day, he wanted to see if he had lost anyone new.
You see, this Occupational therapy practitioner asked, “What matters to you?” not, “What’s the matter with you?” (What is OT?, n.d).
This was something I wanted to be a part of! The rest, as they say, is history!
